This winter, figure skating has been offered for the first time as an optional winter sport. In the past, Mr. Escala has always coached an ice hockey team, but this year there were not enough students to fill out a team. As an alternative to hockey, Ms. Pettis, who has experience in figure skating, offered an alternative use for the ice that we rent each year at the Englewood Field Club: the new winter skating activity!  In addition to Mr. Escala and Ms. Pettis, Mrs. Khutorsky and Mr. Messler have been chaperoning the activity.

To determine if skating would be a viable option, Sophia Lanava, a seventh grader, went around with a piece of paper asking whether students would sign up for skating. More than twenty people signed up initially, and the class size has grown to more than forty students.  Mrs. Khutorsky said, “We didn’t know if we would have enough interest to make ice skating happen, so we were pleasantly surprised at how many students signed up for the class.”

Students not only have been offered ice skating at the Englewood Field Club, but also have been able to participate in other activities that are available at the EFC venue, such as bowling. Students have been trying to form a synchronized skating team, although they will not be skating in any competitions this year, as the team is still a work in progress and a lot of students are new to the sport.

Students Sofia Cordover (6th) and Xander Lifshitz (7th) are extremely excited about participating in the new ice skating sport.  Sofia said, “It’s fun to skate with my friends after school and spend some more practice time on the ice.”  Xander said, “It was hard at first, and I fell on my butt a lot, but the fact that I kept trying took me far.  I love ice skating, and it is the best sport that I have done so far at EMS.”

It is unclear if next year ice skating will be offered or if ice hockey will run instead, but for now, the ice skating sport has been a real success.
