Fidget Spinners are rapidly growing in popularity. Fidget Spinners are three wheeled propellers that students bring into class and use to “help them focus.” Many teachers do not approve of the usage during class and do not believe that it helps students focus. Keren Mandelzis and Parisa Verma sent out a survey to see how many kids in our school own fidget spinners.

63 students responded to the survey. The majority of kids do not own fidget spinners, but there was only a two person difference between owners and non-owners.  We asked Ms. Weeks about her opinion on this matter, and she said that it is distracting not only to herself but to other kids; she thinks that fidget spinners do not help students focus, and they bring it to class just to play with them. In all, she does not approve of the usage of fidget spinners during class. We also interviewed Mr. Messler, Ms. Man, and Mr. Niemczyk about their opinions. Mr. Messler said that he thinks fidget spinners are, “A distraction. Unnecessary.” Ms. Man agreed with Mr. Messler but during certain circumstances, she would allow the use of them during class. If she was in the middle of class, for example, and a student pulled out a fidget spinner and started using it, she would not approve, but if the class had to sit through a long lecture, she would not mind. Mr. Niemczyk has a different perspective.

“I think they’re fine except that they make too much noise,” he said. “I wouldn’t have a problem with them if they didn’t make noise. Instead of using them in class, I would recommend that students who have excess energy in my class should doodle or take more notes.”

Overall, students may enjoy the use of fidget spinners, but the majority of teachers do not appreciate the use of fidget spinners during class.
